Why don’t people in romantic relationships try shorter commitments, like 1-2 years? Why is it always “forever” or else maybe-ending-tomorrow?

Before we got married, my wife and I got “handfasted”(twice).
Which is to say, we threw a fancy-dress party with our friends and parents, and using a ceremony we wrote together we committed to our relationship for a year and a day!
