This is a super common pattern learned from childhood
Teacher yells at you to pay attention so you sit up straight to *show* that you are paying attention, and begin to conflate paying attention with using muscle
It's fun to play with sustained focus without using muscle

I'm guessing that while you play in that state your breathing is also super tight and shallow - that in particular messes with your system such that it probably impairs your ability to play the game

BeatSaber is a weird game in that it encourages flow over focus, especially on higher difficulties. I haven't tried it with AT tho - I wonder if the VR messes you up...
