in case people are still confused, last night i got something like a dozen DMs from people, maybe half of them strangers, being like "thank you for writing the money thread," several "i'm in this position too and it's so hard to talk about" that's who i write these threads for

looking at the quote tweets is quite illuminating – some people assume he wants people to feel sorry for him, which doesn't seem apparent to me at all others seem to assume that it didn't occur to him to keep those thoughts private, when it's obviously a deliberate choice

it's the same response i get when i talk about gender and sex stuff too. "oh, thank fuck someone is talking about this." that's the good stuff it's an unfortunate fact about twitter that to reach these people i also have to reach people who will not be helped at all

ideally the tweets would somehow only be shown to people it would help and not people who are like trying to get money for medical bills or whatever and just absolutely don't need to hear about my problems. that's not how twitter works tho ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

probably i wouldn't be getting ratio'd right now if i'd said "a lot of money" instead of $100k but the specific amount was important to the story imo. it was an obscene amount of money and that's why it was paralyzing

and yeah, once again, it is extremely fucked up that there are people for whom even $1k or $10k of this money would be completely life-changing. there are way more than $100k worth of these people and i don't know how to pick between them and this is the situation we're in

I can relate to this part for sure… I have worked more in the past few months than any other time in my entire adult life, raised prices, it’s growing. Husband still out-earns me literally 6x or more

Paralyzing is couple of thousand $s &2007 car on its last leg to my name&adult disabled daughter to care for after her dad became so ill can no longer help at all. Trying to figure out how to make enough $ to keep her home(working from home) &not in institution. You have options

Maybe this should tell you something about the myth of meritocracy and what working hard actually gets you. Someone referenced a great book in the original thread that talks of exactly the anxieties you expressed.

That's the reality of life for those who don't have parents that'll hand over a hundred grand (or can, or have no parents at all). Use this to agitate to get workers to be paid more, rather than complain that you've got support. Also, spread the support to others who haven't any!
