in case people are still confused, last night i got something like a dozen DMs from people, maybe half of them strangers, being like "thank you for writing the money thread," several "i'm in this position too and it's so hard to talk about" that's who i write these threads for

looking at the quote tweets is quite illuminating – some people assume he wants people to feel sorry for him, which doesn't seem apparent to me at all others seem to assume that it didn't occur to him to keep those thoughts private, when it's obviously a deliberate choice

it's the same response i get when i talk about gender and sex stuff too. "oh, thank fuck someone is talking about this." that's the good stuff it's an unfortunate fact about twitter that to reach these people i also have to reach people who will not be helped at all

probably i wouldn't be getting ratio'd right now if i'd said "a lot of money" instead of $100k but the specific amount was important to the story imo. it was an obscene amount of money and that's why it was paralyzing

like i didn't get into this in the thread but the $100k trivialized my attempts at making money by comparison. i've made on the order of a few thousand dollars tutoring and coaching which is the work i'm most proud of. that is *two orders of magnitude* less. fucking nuts

and yeah, once again, it is extremely fucked up that there are people for whom even $1k or $10k of this money would be completely life-changing. there are way more than $100k worth of these people and i don't know how to pick between them and this is the situation we're in

What you're talking about is an "echo chamber" and to some extent you're already in one. You're asking for your tweets to only be shown to other rich folks so you'll only get replies that match your own biases. This is a Bad Thing - it divorces you from the realities of life.

Yes, it's painful for those of us who work to exist, in huge debt with no prospect of fixing it, not having so industrious or caring or involved or living parents, but you could be learning from witnessing that pain & understanding the realities behind it, not insisting we learn?
