this is the kind of thing that makes this whole topic hard to think about and relate to, for me. like i think i a little bit get it. it is obscene. not just a little obscene. really obscene. i could see someone reading this thread and fucking hating my guts

what I’m saying is: if someone gave me $100,000 right now (age 31), it would change my life, and I am not “poor” by any reasonable definition. it’s a little obscene seeing someone treat that amount as having primarily emotional significance.

I don't hate your guts for it. I think it's great to get honest. Yes, there's a tinge of "by parents barely had anything to give to me and it's all unfair" and a bit of "I could literally save a dozen people out of abusive situations with that" but, it's all about the perspective

"people are a process within their environment" applies in this case too, and judging someone by being that way isn't really useful. And I appreciate the honesty. I think in general, being open about feelings and that not being judged or shamed is necessary as a foundation

I do, somewhat, wish that you understood that this places you in a position to changes lives fairly easily. I know I had that moment when I came out & started being surrounded by minimum wage service work ppl after being in ivy league and tech shit

It honestly doesn't matter that much. It's like building the tools to a one off task. Just do it a couple times first, get an inside look, see how it feels, and if you keep doing it, then you start to build systems and optimize and whatnot

I think a few months you wrote about someone asking you for money, but you weren't sure if they were sincere or trying to scam you. Might sound rude, but were you "vetted" before being given the 100k? Did you need or deserve it?

You could give 20 strangers $100 each, and that would still only be 2% of that. Just give every homeless person you see $10 to $50.

you don’t even need to give it away. invest it now and let it be your income and spend your free time helping others. let your parents retire. 100k is not that much money in the long run but you can turn it into way more over time

With your free time, you could do volunteer work. Volunteer work in general would expose you to people who you could help in a face-to-face manner. If you don't know anyone whose life would be changed from an anonymous donation or two, there are ways to be introduced to them.

It might also help with this: twitter.com/QiaochuYuan/st Pick some cause you give a shit about, and volunteer for a bit. Don't have to give away any money even, but it would almost certainly juice up that part of your brain that is flailing, desperate to be needed in a community.

like when i explain my current life circumstances to myself in a matter-of-fact way it does not look good. i literally have no job, no gf, no friends (in the sense of people i interact with irl regularly), no community, no mission, no purpose, no team, no religion...
