this tweet has been bouncing around in my head for months since i first read it and my current thought is that i'm not convinced the beetle thing is fundamentally more meaningful than the sonic thing anymore

the main issue with video games is that a guy who, if he lived in 1820s germany, would have done something like document every type of beetle in his local province instead ends up making a 26 part youtube series about how to get all the rings in every sonic game

Values misalignment masquerading as a moral virtue. There were plenty of 1820's nerds who were also measuring skulls for phrenology and categorizing stars by their aetheric diffusion through the phlogiston.

That same guy could also make a 26-part YouTube series about every type of graphics card in his local province, much more similar mindset. Also 1820s beetle boy would be cut off from a community of other beetleheads. Not sure Owen's take is the correct read of this kind of hobby.
