in-person, your incentive is to look like you're working for 8h(ish) while you're at the office
which, for a lot of jobs, isn't feasible; at best you're available for ~8h

People don’t want to admit that there are some folks who are just really capable of doing their jobs in less than 40 hours a week. Like, ‘A player’ level good, not just like, getting by.
