a few days ago i took a medium dose of acid and wrote for several hours straight and admitted some things to myself, mostly about money let's start here: last august my mom gave me $100,000 for my birthday. i resented her for this and also suppressed the resentment

thanks a lot for sharing QC i’m curious to know if you have any thoughts on this proposition that’s been rolling around in my head for a while and seems relevant: “any adult who is capable of taking care of themself ought to take care of themself.”

true, most all of the words and phrases i consider to describe what I have in mind are pretty loaded, we could dance around meanings for a while. maybe eli5 gets to the heart of it: “for the good of society, if you can make enough money to take care of yourself, you should.”

the word "can" is still doing a lot of work here (also "should"). there's really a lot wrapped up in the question of what it means to say you can or can't do something. like, to be explicit, it's not at all clear whether i "can" hold down a full-time job

agreed on “can,” that can shift around as well based on factors like environment, illness, person-job fit your employee troubles are really surprising to me, though of course i’m operating off of not that much information - your podcasts with eigen mostly

yeah in retrospect a lot of it might've come down to poor mentorship. i could potentially do a lot better with the right mentor but i'd still have to find something that seems worth doing

Working sucks, even for those perfectly comfortable with the system (I think). The problem ppl have with this thread is not that you don’t work. I think it’s that no amount of hard work translates into “earning” in the way capitalism pretends it does. This is a heavy example.

As a person with an incurable disease (aka disabled) I treat with chemo shots once a week that I can barely afford, thank you for saying this! As for the man baby op, all of that and I still have a job and work every day. Go to therapy.

Nah you sound like you just lack fundamental personal values and true purpose in life. I get that way too where no matter what I do it feels meaningless to push forward. To overcome this I must stop focusing on self and instead help others; with that being said pls give me 30k 😇
