thanks a lot for sharing QC i’m curious to know if you have any thoughts on this proposition that’s been rolling around in my head for a while and seems relevant: “any adult who is capable of taking care of themself ought to take care of themself.”

the word "capable" is doing almost all of the work there it really depends on what that means ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ well "ought" too but let's start with "capable"

true, most all of the words and phrases i consider to describe what I have in mind are pretty loaded, we could dance around meanings for a while. maybe eli5 gets to the heart of it: “for the good of society, if you can make enough money to take care of yourself, you should.”

the word "can" is still doing a lot of work here (also "should"). there's really a lot wrapped up in the question of what it means to say you can or can't do something. like, to be explicit, it's not at all clear whether i "can" hold down a full-time job

i don't have any physical disabilities preventing me from doing that but i do have... uh... a lot of trouble being a productive employee, in my experience. am in some sense disabled? should i be treated as such? no idea

agreed on “can,” that can shift around as well based on factors like environment, illness, person-job fit your employee troubles are really surprising to me, though of course i’m operating off of not that much information - your podcasts with eigen mostly
