"LSD is bad because when people take it their values become different from mine" lmao
Quote Tweet
It’s true that LSD won’t destroy your entire life and put you out on the street the way some other drugs can. Still, I've seen lots of heavy users turn from competent rising elites into third-rate mystics. It's dangerous stuff if you have any ambition at all.

in all seriousness LSD is a big part of what led to me dropping out of grad school and i wouldn't have it any other way. there were parts of me that were buried that are important and LSD helped them come out and in doing so undermined all the reasons i was in grad school

LSD didn't change my "terminal values." my personality was a rickety building that wasn't working very well and LSD shifted a bunch of pieces of it. that's not exactly the same as fixing it but i had to start somewhere and that was where i started

i wouldn't necessarily recommend it to other people without a lot more warnings and disclaimers but at this point i pretty much have to accept that LSD has permanently wound itself into the story of my life and i have a relationship to it and i like that relationship a lot

in the long run LSD helped me resolve a lot of confusions i was laboring under but it's not a magic confusion-resolving machine. some people seem to become more confused. or maybe they're right and i'm wrong who knows 🤔 this shit is actually hard is what i'm trying to say

It’s straight out of the field of AI safety research. There is a convergent tendency to value not changing your values if your goal is to achieve them, and hence resisting having your values modified should be considered the default.

If we grant the premise that LSD does that (unknown to me, I am ignorant about the drug), then I would certainly want to avoid it if I wanted to get rich and change the world!

I feel like "may permanently and drastically change your terminal values" is a pretty important warning label for a drug a lot of people view as relatively harmless
