a woman came up to me on the street just now in berkeley to ask me for money and i was about evenly torn between whether she was scamming me or not. i'd like to hear what you guys think of the story, i'm really not sure

Lived in Berkeley 15 years. Got approached/had multiple friends scammed with stories like this in the Bay Area. Essentially, you look like a mark if you have an open, friendly demeanor/make eye contact/etc.

If you’d offered to put her up at a place there in town (east bay hostels etc are cheaper) and said you could drive or Uber her there, she would have told you no. If you’d offered to prepay for her “hostel stay” by using your credit card over the phone, she would say no.
