update: my sleep got much worse after not using the oral appliance for a week or so, so now i’m using it again + doing a lot of jaw stretches on the bright(er) side, gave me the last push to try taping my mouth for sleep and it has been *shockingly* good

What do you use for taping? Is it something you'd recommend to try as an easy first step if the sleep/waking energy problems sound relatable?

Overall idea is just you're supposed to nose breathe? Sounds like our problems might be similar, I get plenty of sleep timewise but always wake up groggy and unrested. Recommend seeing a sleep specialist or does independent research seem like it can cover basics first?
