screenshots are an outrageously load-bearing part of modern internet infrastructure currently the best way to port posts between sites even though it makes their text unsearchable and doesn’t generate a link back to original this is dumb and we should be able to do better

the traditional issue with extracting pieces of another webpage is that you don’t just need the locally relevant HTML/CSS elements, but also currently *all* of the javascript code on the webpage, since it’s hard to extract only the code that does animations or basic behavior

if you add the requirement that the provider of the page has to specify the way individual elements can be exported it’s far easier, but doesn’t quite capture the feeling of being able to link to anything you want

This is one idea for how to accomplish this, QC. Something I will eventually work on if no one else gets there first.

The most exciting implication of @RoamResearch block references is the design of a protocol for the open web built on the blockification of original sources, allowing clean/easy block attribution, connection, and translation into different formats. We could call it Quoteblock. 👇

I dunno, the benefit of having them as screenshots is that if the original site isn't hosted any more or changes the content, it still displays the same image Lots of meta-data formats out there for e.g. posts, tweets, and whatnot, though no singular well-adopted standard
