how are people so good at and comfortable with telling long, detailed stories about themselves?
I could be kidnapped at gunpoint by a traveling band of ninjas and it would take me 4 seconds max to tell the entire story
oh, i’ve also watched a lot of stand-up comedy and legitimately think i picked up some useful stuff about pacing and intonation and body language and setups and punchlines from that
a lot of the comfort involves calibrating to the interest level of whoever i’m talking with. i think i am okay at discerning when people are in the mood to hear the 5s version vs the 30s version vs the 5m version and so forth. sometimes i ask explicitly
story telling as standup comedy is a huge one for me.
"whats a tight 5 minute set? whats a good 15 minute set?" let me work on this story at a college party, let me work on it at a job interview, let me tell a whole class of undergraduates my life story. Then, Ted Talk.
