random thought: i don’t feel like i selected for this at all but there’s a surprising (to me) amount of musical talent among the people i like best on twitter and i don’t have a good explanation of why

i think i used to think of music as something only “talented” people did and everyone else sort of passively consumed but maybe it’s just not like that at all. maybe everyone can make music and whatever else i’m selecting for selects for people who tried, ever, at some point

jazz cats are always comparing music to language, and i think in this regard that's exactly right; not everyone can be a great orator but everyone can have an enjoyable conversation and the same is true musically

i blame recorded music for this :/ and i agree, i think anyone can make music, the only trouble is when u comparr it with professionals using "objective" standards of artistry

Professional quality music is eldritch now. No two ways about it. The aesthetic of “person in a room playing music” has been completely eliminated from mainstream music.
So now when you record your own music it’s like, I’m garbage this sounds like a person in a room

It makes sense to me how certain behaviors can be clustered, and in selecting for one you stumble on the others.
Kinda like how so many people i follow are queer in some way, sometimes i don't even know until they come out of the closet later

i think i used to disdain stereotypes but they’re accessing something right about how shockingly clustered different personality traits, behaviors, interests, etc. are
they aren’t perfectly correlated but they’re shockingly correlated, it really do be like that sometimes
