The thing you think of as being a universal trait of people like you is almost always much more specific to you and the people you talk about the problem with than you think it is.

People typical mind like nobody's business and generally talk about their experiences with people who are like them. Everyone is much less normal than they think they are.

You probably have no idea what the typical human experience is, and this isn't improved nearly as much as you think it is by sharing e.g. a gender with someone. (I don't have much of an idea either, I just try not to pretend that I do)

As a result, when you talk about the experiences that you personally have as if they are universal, you are probably alienating a lot of people.

Should you talk about those experiences? Absolutely! Should you talk about how your identity interacts with those experiences? Hell yes! Should you claim that all people who share that identity have the same experience? If you want to alienate a lot of people who don't, sure!

Oh god, everyone thinks I'm subtweeting them now. This isn't about people failing to add enough qualifiers to their tweets. This is about people angrily shouting about all people who share trait X have experience Y and if you don't believe that you need to listen to X people.

Like you're probably a bit guilty of the thing that I'm complaining about, most people including me are, but if you don't weaponise it I basically don't care.

The specific object-level prompt is that I've had a number of quiet conversations with women friends about how they feel very excluded by online discourse about supposedly universal female experiences, or e.g. TUOC's post here.
