game of thrones has a lot of straightforwardly evil people in it too (petyr baelish, joffrey, arguably cersei). there is certainly a lot of conflict even between the characters trying to do the right thing, tho

hmm okay. i agree that baelish and cersei were pursuing their own agendas as they see fit. for me a big part of what i was getting at in the original thread was the idea of a story in which every character is explicitly prosocial but things get tremendously fucked anyway
