If it was a year then obviously don't bother. One month is such a trivial amount of time to complete a significant investment.

I feel like you cannot objectively evaluate this decision without a deep understanding of the referenced startup. Is it ~actually~ becoming a thing? If so, go for it. Hard to judge the risk/reward without an adequate understanding of the reward.

How legit do you think a search engine is going to be at this time.
Maybe if the product isn’t really the engine, but the stuff it searches.
It’s not like he must choose between the two things either.

tell them to do 2 more weeks before they quit. by the end of that they'll only have 2 more to go and it won't seem like anything

I assume they're asking you for advice bc they're not sure, which is good bc you can amplify the unknowing, getting them closer to their intrinsic sense of what they want. also could ask them to flip a coin, as you always get to the answer right before it lands 😅
