was thinking the other day about how "qi" / "ki" / "prana" all mean both "breath" and "life / spirit / soul" and how i didn't know a similar word in english
but there *is* a similar word in latin and it's "anima"

"anima" as in "animal" (something with life) but also as in "animated" (endowed with life). i got here from feeling weird about the etymology of "creature" - it literally means "a created thing" so implies the existence of a creator, and i was wondering about other synonyms

jeez i missed this earlier but even "pneuma," why are there multiple terms like this in the same language 🧐 (hmm wait okay maybe it's because apparently the root of "psyche" means "blow" but not "breath"?)

Genetically I am 98% soul according to this definition. Feeling suddenly much more spiritual.

if you dig another layer to the page for proto-germanic saiwalō, it starts whiplashing between "actually it could be a reference to the LAKE OF THE DEAD or it could just be this word for soul (which could itself be a reference to the LAKE OF THE DEAD):

I remember looking up the etym of anime years ago, and being surprised by the connection to “soul” too. Went down very interesting rabbitholes that led to the history of animatronics, chess-playing automatons, etc

it’s quite ironic that “animation” now is used to refer to things that are literally dead and only pretend to be alive! otoh, we see a deep kabbalistic connection between “anime” and “ki” which may explain some of the lasting popularity of ki attacks as an anime concept
