why do we have explicit memories? no, really. its like... everything you experience changes your constiution right? like you become shaped such that you can deal with it in the future, and most you forget. so why keep any of it explicitly? what even IS explicit mmeory for???

OP didn’t include anything about interacting with other people. the argument might hold water for a lone individual; would be interesting to see if feral children have explicit memories of their childhoods. storytelling is fundamentally social
It's really just recognition though right? Animals do this, even if it is not at the level of mind's-eye
