there are a few things that really get to me: accusations of narcissism, grifting, $, sex, cults
I have witnessed/experienced firsthand how people who actually obsess about those things are destructive, and I try very very very hard to NOT be that guy
to me the dude was obviously projecting and, like, criticisms from random dudes on the internet don't happen to trigger any of my particular baggage so it's easy for me to say "so just ignore it" but i'm guessing it's different for you
anybody who knows me in real life knows how much of an effort I make to actively steer away from those things. heck, you can see it in my tweets too. I discourage anybody who even jokes about this stuff.
can you see how, if I wanted a cult, I would encourage this instead?
like can you see the tweets I'm NOT doing? can you imagine how much money I would make selling online courses shilling dating advice? can you imagine if I decided to get involved in commenting on American and Indian culture wars? there are so many ways I could grift *big time*
instead I make long-ass videos & threads encouraging people to be nuanced, to be patient, to be kinder to each other. I could drop a "how to get 25,000 followers on twitter" ebook right now and make, I'd guess ~$10,000 on the sopt. and why shouldn't I, actually? but it irks me
instead I agonize for *months* over a single book that's trying to help young people with their inner turmoil, bc I have high standards, and I wanna be very careful not to say the wrong thing... it just feels cruel that someone looks past all that and be like "u $ obsessed bro?"
I get it, it's a numbers game thing, sigh. yea this is what happens at 25k, bla bla, sooner or later randos start randomly attacking your most intimate/personal wounds for the lulz, often maybe without even knowing they're doing it. I am very sensitive
"Visa if you are sensitive why are you So Online"
because I am always thinking about the kids who are struggling in isolation and despair like I was, who would really benefit from seeing an example of a curious nerd flourishing openly in public
