if you read the full quote I think what he’s saying does describe a shift in the mainstream industry/scene, and it’s really unfair how everyone just latches on to the first sentence of what was presumably a rather intimate interview (as all Zane Lowe’s interviews tend to be)

Adam Levine tells Zane Lowe he's "sad" that there's no bands anymore: "When the first Maroon 5 album came out there were still other bands. I feel like there aren’t any bands anymore, you know? That’s the thing that makes me kind of sad ... I feel like they’re a dying breed."

I think just traditional old school 4-5 piece bands, rock, blues, punk, emo, metal, etc - all of those scenes have gotten relatively less fashionable than DJs, dance, techno, trance, house, etc
