Ever since I realized a lot of "empath" sensibilities link to poor coping strategies and hint at underlying problems, I've been cringing whenever I see someone proudly describe themselves as one. My empathy came from needing to work around threats. It's not great.

yep. one of my copes as a kid was "learn to charm people so they won't abuse and osctracize you". I am no longer living in fear of abuse, I no longer feel threatened or needy. But hey, I still have the charm skillset. and I can use it in a nourishing way to help others

I somewhat recently went to a talk about "Highly Sensitive People" and thought that may be related to trauma or similar experiences. Interesting to look at this now from the perspective of attachment theory.

Funny...I’ve actually always thought of “empath” as code for “I get myself all wrapped up in others people’s shit so that I don’t have to deal with my own.” This isn’t far off from that.
