is "green cryptocurrency" a thing anyone's working on? "green blockchain tech" seems fundamentally impossible from the outside, but maybe there's some clever implementation I'm not thinking of, or way to at least make it Less Bad

I believe the answer to the first part is "transaction fees". As for the second, it's really when they become too expensive (probably due a carbon pricing, but maybe just extraction costs) - we're not going to run out.

Yeah, if you can decouple power generation from carbon output, it ceases to be so awful. (We're a long way from there). I believe that proof-of-stake instead of proof-of-work addresses this somewhat as well.
