is "green cryptocurrency" a thing anyone's working on? "green blockchain tech" seems fundamentally impossible from the outside, but maybe there's some clever implementation I'm not thinking of, or way to at least make it Less Bad

i asked a few people a version of this question wrt the long-term endstate of BTC specifically and they thought it’d be powered by renewables in the long term, and maybe specifically satellites
(more specifically i asked what happens when the block reward goes to zero and we run out of fossil fuels)

I believe the answer to the first part is "transaction fees".
As for the second, it's really when they become too expensive (probably due a carbon pricing, but maybe just extraction costs) - we're not going to run out.

Yeah, if you can decouple power generation from carbon output, it ceases to be so awful. (We're a long way from there).
I believe that proof-of-stake instead of proof-of-work addresses this somewhat as well.

Proof of stake is significantly less power consuming. Also off chain transactions are becoming the norm
