it is genuinely astonishing how often this works. physicists will literally perform taylor series expansions in a parameter that is like ~1 and somehow this doesn't produce total garbage. completely mysterious to me ribbonfarm.com/2021/02/25/her

lots of physics laws are not laws so much as approximations using one simple trick because the actual thing is hard or impossible to solve the trick relies on an assumption. that assumption doesnt hold in reality. and yet the trick works wtf

sort of like if the manufacturers specs say "maximum load 20 pounds" and you load it up with an elephant and things seem like theyre going fine
