pet peeve: "repressed memories aren't a real thing"
when I was 18, I suddenly remembered *the entire third grade*
what do you want me to call that???
Conversation
repressed memories exist but it is incredibly hard (impossible?) to differentiate them from fabricated memories, so culturally we decided we had to pick a side, and "accept all self-reports of memories" had more horrific and obviously-false stuff attached to it

worth mentioning that thereâs a big difference between âwe decided this type of evidence shouldnât be admissible in courtâ and âyou should not, personally, pay any attention to your own repressed memoriesâ
I think one of Bessel van der Kolk's points was that genuine trauma memories are of a qualitatively different nature than ordinary biographical memories, and that all of the studies on fabricated memories just create ordinary memories.

(Though this also doesn't prove that it *is* impossible to fabricate genuine trauma memories, we just can't ethically do that experimen so nobody has.)
