that is, at least the way i interpreted what he said (i could look this up if desired), an internal conflict you actually consciously feel conflicted about is never "i want X" vs. "i want Y," it's always "i want X" vs. "i shouldn't want X, i should want Y"

these discussions remind me of how ethical theories like utilitarianism can only judge, not motivate or invent, and so insistence on the theory’s normativity feels like the imposition of a superego; half-baked thought

yep, this is why I think it’s so interesting the way “virtue ethics” redefines the whole meaning of ethics I’m not specifically interested in “virtues” but in this concept of ethics as the whole art of living, which is cultural like all art

hmm like you could even see music as ethical, or consider music as a prototype for ethics which chord should I play? which note would bring the most pleasure to the audience? music involves responsibility, creativity, sensitivity, tact...

This juxtaposition seems better the more I think about it. Harmony, traditions, improvisation, beauty, responsiveness... and ethical theory as similar to music theory: derivative of practice and tradition, but useful and inspiring and communicative
