feynman recommended something like this iirc!
I think the Gleich biography mentioned that he once prepped for an exam by deriving everything he had to know from first principles.
Almost failed the exam though iirc 😬

This reminds me of some problem set in an undergrad physics class, where I totally forgot about the reduced form of some formula and spent like 5 pages fumbling around re-deriving in when it should have been a plug and calculate problem.
