dead-looking eyes def relevant to avoiding corpses!
i spent a little time looking at anime eyes to understand how to draw them and the key feature appears to be the little spots of white, which are reflections of light sources - they make the eyes look wet, i think

i am genuinely confused why american cartoons have not evolved over time to be cuter / more pleasant to look at (MLP a clear counterexample and imo anime-inspired eyes). deliberate ugliness is weirdly common. i think it makes sense in a show like rick and morty but... still 🤔

wonder if the deliberate ugliness thing can be traced to a few specific influential shows. maybe beavis and butthead, south park, ren and stimpy? kinda the simpsons?
maybe it was part of the whole ‘90s grunge rebellion thing 🧐
