The only book I think that has this involves a character who rejects that society choosing instead to embody evil and wickedness and invite the hatred of all in this world in hope of keeping it from falling into ruin. He fails on both accounts.

not scifi (well...), but this is basically my little pony friendship is magic there's still conflict. love and care and respect don't stop disagreements from happening, but they help you handle them and it doesn't mean you'll find your meaning straight away either
