rationalists are in the news For Some Reason
earlier, asked and failed to interview (ex? post?) rationalist for the hit piece published today because my god who would talk to cade metz
but QC had things to say and does so here:

Can we come up with a new label that just refers to "people who were super pissed off about the whole NYT-SSC thing" and just have that be the Schelling-identity that unites rats and postrats?

what about non rats who are also pissed

I'm confused about what is or isn't a rat, post-rat, rat-adj. If I have a lot of similarities with members of these groups, isn't that sorta membership?
I only dabbled in SSC and found the sequences kinda boring (maybe bc I'm old/exp?)
*wondering about your non rat claim*

Just finished the QC podcast, and I had to keep holding myself back from chiming in with my own resonant experiences even though the conv is like a week old ๐๐
*wonder if part of it is me having grown up near Berkeley*

i grew up near seattle actually! (well, complicated - ages 0-2 in china, 2-6 in singapore, 6-11 in vancouver WA, 11-18 in bellevue WA)
A bit in Boston too, eh? My thinking was that the rationalist social scene you described had a Bay Area / East Bay / Berkeley vibe
My MD experience (see bio pic for clue) was certainly life altering. I like to think in a good way, but certainly non-typical rationalist way ๐

ah gotcha you're saying the scene sounded very berkelian yeah i'd say that's right. which is surprising since a bunch of the people in the scene moved there from elsewhere and yet somehow it still managed to absorb a bunch of the spirit of berkeley or something?
