One thing that's always struck me about rationalists is that a large fraction just seem to be missing their amygdalas. So much so that you could fairly gloss postrationalism as "the rediscovery of the wisdom of the hindbrain".

A missing amygdala is great for intellectual spelunking, not as great for recognizing that the shining reflection in the dark forest is in fact a pair of hungry eyes.

I mean this literally. I can think of several friends who are forever getting themselves into scary situations because their threat-detectors just don't go off.
