one of the fucked up things about this is it didn't occur to me that anything was "wrong" for a long time b/c all the teenagers i saw in TV, movies, etc. growing up also hated their parents, and also so did nearly all my friends, so it all just seemed normal to me

Relatedly, something I noticed recently: as a kid I just naturally hated Edna Krabappel because I saw her as the mean teacher who gave Bart a bad time at school. Seeing her now is different - she actually really tries with him, she just can't get him to not be a "bad kid" and 1/

It makes them both feel like failures. I see it much more as a systemic issue with how school is than a personal failing of here (or his) now.
