so but then the medical professions have to work with some normative health teleology, especially when diagnosing and treating patients whose “disorder” causes dysfunction within the polity, e.g. difficulties in school, work, family, etc

but since that teleology isn’t anchored in public understanding, and exists within a worldview that barely has any coherent structure of the common good or what it means functionally to be “good”, to “flourish”, it all seems like the alienated judgments of a disconnected praxis

for me it’s especially interesting that ADHD as a disorganization is kind of essentially problematic for almost any teleology, due to how it specifically disrupts the ability to engage in planning, carry out decisions, maintain orderly relationships, etc

for me this coherently explains why I as a young student acutely and chronically troubled by disorganization found MacIntyre’s book on virtue ethics so extremely salient and compelling and beautiful, but was unable to live up to it until I was diagnosed and got medication

the thing about Aristotelian virtue ethics is that it presupposes in its audience that they have received an adequate upbringing within a reasonable polity and that they are not crucially disabled in some way

slaves and women were seen as incapable of virtue, bad at planning and thinking and having noble desires, but Aristotle couldn’t recognize that this was BECAUSE they were excluded from civic participation and the right type of upbringing

and e.g. Gabor Maté views ADHD as an underdevelopment caused by a sensitive predisposition combined with some early childhood “wounding”, which can be slowly healed by adult developmental plasticity, with the help of medication and coaching

from all this I start to see the adult with ADHD as a person whose innate sensitivity led to a ruptured upbringing within a society that already enacts its own type of cultural “disorder”: incoherent ethics, dysfunctional education, alienated healthcare, atomized community

ADHD as a teleological difficulty that grows epidemically in an anti-teleological polity that itself is unable to formulate and work towards goals, fails to envision a coherent common good, does not invite youth to participate in a society that actually makes any goddamned sense
