Conversation
looking to crowdsource responses, RTs appreciated:
what sorts of activities feel like “rest” or “relaxation” to you? how can you tell? what do “rest” and “relaxation” feel like to you? physically? emotionally?

remove all "should"s
on a "day off" I might look super productive but it's only doing thing I wanna do in the moment
sometimes I wanna sit around & watch TV; sometimes I wanna spend 12 hours making a thing
either way stress goes way down & I feel better the longer I can do it

Replying to
completely serious question, not rhetorical in the slightest: how do you know what you wanna do?
Replying to
usually I already know (e.g. was thinking about it at work, looking forward to it, etc)
but if not, can do some annealing-type search
try small amts of things that are usually fun, pay attention to feeling (spark joy?), try longer & longer amts as resistance fades

My initial/current guess is that when we want something (concrete), we are 1) noting that simulating doing the thing feels pleasant, and 2) noticing inner preparations for actions toward achieving it. Wanting to swim: imagining it feeling good, and looking for good spots to enter

The Sage falls asleep not because he ought to
Nor even because he wants to
But because he is sleepy

I keep lists of things I enjoy doing and/or want to do: things to read or watch, places near or far I want to go, meditations to hold, people to talk to, etc.
