Walt Whitman did think about this stuff but i was mostly using his image as someone deeply in touch w/ the deeper soul of America, to object to calling our flaws our essence

The grandeur of the land, the will to connect - the sociability! The tendency to extremes, the ambition and the rugged homeliness, the rockets, the isolationism, the imperialism, the cross country drives
