it might originate online somewhere, i'm not sure i believe the premise is simply that trying to prove oneself ethical in an inherently unethical system is a game that you can't win

this feels weird to me. like i am as fond of critiquing capitalism on twitter as the next guy, but also, someone in your network needs money in order for basically anything interesting to happen and might as well try to make that money in a way that feels better than default

also part of the idea is that it *does* feel weird there is an instinct that people have to try to do things "right", and they get trapped by the fact that, under capitalism, there is no *right* way that clearly causes minimal harm

"there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" is a slogan that attempts to extricate people from this trap (a trap which, generally, serves to reinforce capitalism)

people often engage in one-upsmanship contests over who can buy the more "ethical" goods in a system that is inherently unethical, for example. the end result of such contests is more capitalism.

this doesn't mean "don't try to do what you feel is right", but rather "noodling over precisely what is 'right' is a trap".
