a lot of the ideas floating around Have Good Opinions Twitter have concrete financial value in theory, stuff like “modern architecture sucks” 🔜 start an architecture firm “everyone is confused about sex” 🔜 start a sex column, become a sex coach, make sex ed youtube vids

“everyone is confused about masculinity” 🔜 start a men’s group, run men’s retreats (okay this one is hard now) “religion is good actually” 🔜 start a church (okay this one is also hard now) etc. etc. and yet approximately none of these conversions are happening

for good reasons of course! we’re dealing with lockdown depression on top of whatever crazy shit we were dealing with before lockdown. all sorts of fears and confusions to sort through around money, careers, doing stuff, taking risks, working with other people, it’s a minefield

on top of just really concrete lack of social, emotional, financial resources; this is not something i talk about too much but i happen to be really lucky to be sitting on a decent pile of savings rn and i might as well use it to figure this money stuff out

i’ve never had a real job and i feel embarrassed about it. will that lack of experience fuck me over? probably but only way to remedy a lack of experience is to acquire experience. meanwhile you have tons of more experienced people in your network to ask for advice

one thing that’s helping this process feel less terrible than it would’ve been in the past is i am attempting to give myself permission to raise literally 100 objections and discard literally 100 ideas until i find something that feels good enough to execute on

yes. this is why i'm giving myself permission to generate and reject a whole bunch of ideas! i was honestly stuck on this for a long time because somehow i had convinced myself that coaching was what i "should" be doing and wasn't willing to dismiss it despite real objections
