each social group has some kind of proof-of-work that functions as social currency. there are no guns to shoot or cars to buy here; here you demonstrate ingroup membership by performing the social ritual of defining concepts for other people to inspect and play with

it's like asking why people dress differently. it's because that's how fashion works, people express both their group affiliation and their individuality. they want to belong and they want to stand out. they base their decisions on their unique experience

so the theory is 'explanations abound for any specific behavior *because* explanations are the social currency of this group'?

and “ok let me explain. so...” *is* the common form, the base chassis upon which all the mods are experimented with. other forms include things like “read the manual” or “educate yourself” or “follow this authority” or “if you don’t know then you don’t belong here” etc
