I thought that dropping out after a couple of dynamical systems papers and then moving on to data science was the most that an ADD mathematician could achieve, tops

Uh, I may have had similarly derailing philosophical crises to you, except well before reaching grad school. (What I don't envy you though is having to live in USA instead of here in Australia. But I suppose you could eventually find work here if you wanted it.)
