I've been kicking around this pet theory that Jesus was an Essene (the folks who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls). He and John the Baptist both fit their "Teacher of Righteousness" mold, though Jesus took it in a very new direction.

its laws provide many object-level benefits, including strong tax (sacrificial portions), food kitchens (feast days), debt forgiveness (jubilee), mandatory time off (sabbath), etc.
