honestly nothing really comes to mind as far as open problems in pure math, or at least precise formally stated ones. there are more open-ended kind of pretheoretical questions like "what is the mathematics of deep learning" or "what is the mathematics of QFT or quantum gravity"

although maybe it would be bad for humanity if we understood deep learning better. as for counter-intuitive... nothing really comes to mind there either, sorry 😅
