oof. so, there are a lot of different ways to think about this, and my preferred way of thinking about it is not the most common one (functor of points). it also depends a lot on what your existing background is. eg, do you already have a sense of what a variety is?

hmm. so i think having some basic concept of what a dynamical system is and the basic kinds of behavior they can exhibit is helpful. scott wrote a really nice version of this for thinking about e.g. depression but it generalizes massively:

i would've answered differently a month ago but rn i want to answer "physics"! a lot of calculus and linear algebra was invented to do physics and that's a lot of where you'll see their really concrete payoffs
