in grad school i was really into doing math that was like loosely inspired by physics but saved you from having to do any real physics and now i'm wondering how much of that was coming from like a suppressed desire to just actually do real physics

just struck by how reading actual physics for a few days straight has caused me to almost completely lose interest in pure math

That's just the opposite of what happened to me. I started doing a degree in physics and after reading some math books I lost interest in physics.

for me i used to be really into physics (in the sense of reading a lot of pop physics books) until i was like 13 which is when i was sort of swept into the world of math competitions
