Sacred prostitution seems closely related. The Babylonian custom seems to have been specifically enacted to prevent total paternity certainty of firstborns, though it rejected female mate choice as well.

I agree that societal norms are often in conflict with female mate choice. The main alternative in practice seems to be mate choice via male conflict over territory, sometimes narratized as (and not entirely decoupled from) inequality in economic production.
