apparently a bunch of these shogi variants were invented by buddhist monks so i imagine boredom lol
some of them were maybe also played ritually and not for entertainment who knows
Ha I was going to comment "who has time for this" but of course the answer is Buddhist monks. They *always* have time for this don't they.
