Introducing my kids to speedruns has been interesting. They have such strong innate intuitions around fairness that exploiting bugs feels like unfair cheating and kills the run for them.
Fortunately I explained the existence of glitchless runs :)

pokemon yellow is so poorly programmed that messing with your items allows you to arbitrarily modify its memory. the speedrunner is simply setting his location to the end of the game, as one does

thinking about the wind waker speedrun i saw where the guy overloaded the games memory so that important objects such as bosses and doors simply did not load
