I think at some point a switch flipped in my head and the 20th century started being part of "history" rather than "stuff that happened recentlyish", so I think there's actually a hard break almost exactly around 2000 where 2001 feels like not that long ago and 1999 is history.

Another data point is that when shows from the 90s talk about stuff that happened in the 80s I instinctively struggle to remember that the 80s means "recently" in that context.

That was my reaction until recently; within the last year or two I've come to grips with 1980 = 40 years ago. Maybe I'm learning to let go?
