personally I found it VERY helpful to learn that an even division of octave into semitones does NOT actually produce perfect ratios
(e.g. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_into)
failing to call this out meant there was always a hidden bit of "shear" in my model of what was going on!!

i learned about equal temperament from a lecture by noam elkies at RSI where he explained how the division into 12 notes could be explained using continued fractions and then played an improvised concert with kit armstrong, one of the other students who was some piano genius
