two things i really appreciated about The Magicians as a fantasy series:
1) magic is a lot of hard fucking work and most people aren't cut out for it
2) even after doing all that hard work the characters are still incredibly unhappy

chemistry, programming, and probably a few other fields of study are basically magic and if you don't do them in the real world you wouldn't do magic in a fantasy world either
